Sensor fusion has always been a hot topic in automation and manufacturing. This concept began in the 1960s and has now evolved to a new level. A simpler idea arises: use all available information and combine to form better information. Better information means more accurate, complete, and reliable information than single or independent data sources. The distinction and classification lies in how the data is combined. Fusion can include a priori knowledge (indirect fusion) or starting from scratch (direct fusion).

It is assumed that batch processing is identified, verified, and controlled by a large number of machines or various production steps. In the late stage of the production process, a large amount of information can be used, but because many of the information currently does not pass the verification of the controller of the given application / device, the information is not shared. And if the information is available, production can adapt, the inspection system becomes simpler and cheaper, and waste can also be reduced.

Sensor fusion can significantly promote the production of small and medium batches in manufacturing, because the data it collects and the information of individual objects can achieve more flexible production.

In the early production process, more and more users moved from final inspection to online inspection. By combining the results of the inspection station with the sensor data during the manufacturing process, errors can be detected more quickly.

Sensor fusion is especially useful for existing plant energy management, condition monitoring, and new systems that require large amounts of information for predictive maintenance. A lot of information is available, but collecting information specifically is not the ultimate goal. For example, energy data can be collected from devices such as flow meters or AC drives; vibration is measured by sensors in the controller.
