On May 25th, OSRAMAG signed a contract with Wuxi New District Management Committee to determine its new LED assembly plant in Jiangsu, China. The back-end plant will be completed and put into production in the second half of 2013. The main business is LED chip enclosure packaging, while its two plants in Regensburg, Germany and Penang, Malaysia continue to produce LED chips.
The demand for LED products is rising sharply. OSRAM saw this trend and decided to build a new plant in Wuxi, China, to further expand the production capacity of two chip factories in Regensburg and Penang. This move will increase Osram's entry into China's largest single lighting market in the world. After the new plant is fully operational, the number of employees can reach up to 1,600.
The new back-end plant in Wuxi is close to Shanghai. Its main function is to install the LED chips produced by the two front-end factories in Regensburg and Penang into the enclosure. In addition, this new assembly plant will help expand the capacity of the Penang plant and provide the general lighting, automotive lighting and industrial lighting products needed for key areas within the Chinese market. The increased back-end LED capacity at the Wuxi plant will help OSRAM to seize the opportunity of rapid growth in the Chinese market and support the two factories in Germany and Malaysia.
Optoelectronic semiconductors such as LED components and laser diodes will see strong growth in the next few years. The world average growth rate is expected to reach 5%. The fastest growing region in the same period will be China, with an average growth rate of 10%. And this growth will extend beyond the components. According to a survey by research institutions, the share of the fast-growing Asian region in the general lighting market currently accounts for about 35% of the global total, and is expected to increase to 45% by 2020. The Chinese market alone has now exceeded 8 billion euros and is expected to double at least by 2020.
