Over 700,000 Android applications

Google (microblogging) announced on Monday that the total number of applications available for download on Android-powered mobile devices has reached more than 700,000. This shows that Android has been comparable to the Apple iOS operating system in the number of mobile applications.

Apple announced last week that the App Store has more than 700,000 models. This means that Google has caught up with Apple in the number of games, production tools, and other applications used on smartphones and tablets.

By attracting application developers to develop applications for the Android platform, Google is trying to eliminate one of Apple’s major selling points on iPhones and iPads—with numerous applications. The application market has become one of the main battlegrounds for Apple and Google, because both companies seek to dominate the market with a market size of $219.1 billion. This is similar to Microsoft's monopoly of the desktop operating system market by allowing other vendors to write applications for the Windows operating system.

The competition between Apple and Google has already surpassed the smartphone market. Google also introduced a 10-inch tablet on Monday, and launched an impact on the market leader iPad at a price of US$399. Both companies also introduced small-screen tablets.

To compete for mobile application developers, Apple has been arguing that the iOS operating system can bring more revenue. Apple announced last week that since the App Store was launched in 2008, the company has paid developers $6.5 billion in revenue.
