China is a major producer and consumer of global lighting products, with the production of energy-saving lamps and incandescent lamps ranking first in the world. Under the stimulation and encouragement of government policies, China's lighting industry has been booming. While the scale of China's lighting industry continues to expand, the scale and number of domestic lighting companies have also expanded simultaneously, and attracted many foreign giants to enter.
At the same time, in the face of the global wave of energy conservation and environmental protection, LED lamps that can achieve “green†lighting are beginning to emerge, and the lighting market in China is showing a rapid growth trend. This has attracted more and more foreign companies to extend their business to China and actively deploy the Chinese market, especially the LED lighting market, in order to achieve future leadership opportunities.
Undoubtedly, China's lighting market is experiencing rapid development. While foreign companies are flooding into the Chinese market, they must understand the local conditions from the policy level and the market level to produce products suitable for the needs of Chinese consumers.
Export market compliance
On the other hand, China is also a major exporter of lighting products, with 70% of domestic production being exported, with North American and European markets being the main markets for exports. These two regional markets have high quality requirements and usually require CSA, UL, CE and RoHS certification. With the rising energy prices and concerns about environmental issues, companies and households are increasingly demanding lighting energy efficiency, which is more inclined to choose energy-efficient, low-energy products. In this regard, foreign markets also have related government projects, such as the Energy Star program, which requires more energy efficiency.
Just as foreign companies entering China need to comply with the Chinese market policy, domestic companies need to be aware of foreign market policies and market requirements when expanding their markets in North America and Europe. In the North American market, for example, they often require reliable third-party testing and certification bodies, such as the CSA Group, to test the structural, quality, and safety aspects of the product to ensure that they meet the relevant standards. Certified products can be affixed with a certification mark provided by a third-party testing and certification body (Figure 1). It is these signs that show consumers that the products they purchase are completely standard-safe and can be purchased with confidence.
Figure 1: CSA Group's three main certification marks, which are applicable to the Canadian market, the US market, and both to the US and Canada markets.
At the same time, these third-party agencies are often authorized by government projects, such as the ENERGY STAR program mentioned above, and authorized third-party agencies can test the energy efficiency of products according to the requirements set by these projects. At the same time, many certification bodies can also provide energy efficiency verification services. Products that meet the requirements will be labeled ENERGY STAR or an energy efficiency verification mark to gain an additional competitive advantage.
Test authentication localization
The certification body is accredited and authorized by various governments or national organizations to test and certify products according to national standards. In the United States, the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) recognizes laboratories that are qualified to test and qualify electrical and gas products in accordance with US standards. OSHA accredited and authorized laboratories are known as the National Accreditation Laboratory (NRTL). The CSA Group is one of the world's leading test and certification bodies to receive this recognition and can provide localized testing and certification services covering a wide range of lighting products (Table 1).
Table 1: Relevant standards for lighting products and standards that CSA Group can test and certify in China.
Taking LED bulbs as an example, in Canada and the United States, the safety standards implemented are the combined standards of two countries, CSA C22.2 No. 1993/UL 1993. The CSA Group can test the lamp according to this standard, including the weight of the lamp, normal temperature rise, abnormal temperature rise, lamp head torque, lamp line/neutral connection and plastic casing compliance, to ensure the quality and safety of the lamp.
Christmas lighting is one of the most demanding products in the North American market. In terms of Christmas lighting test, the reference standard is CSA Standard C22.2 No 37, Technical InformaTIon Letter No B-70 and ANSI/UL Standard 588, which mainly tests the safety of the product under tensile test, temperature rise test and cold impact test.
For the most popular LED lighting fixtures today, CSA is based on CAN/CSA-C22.2 No. 250.13-12 and ANSI/UL 8750, 1st Ed. The main certification mode is to use traditional luminaire standards with 250.13 and 8750 to do certification.
to sum up
In order to enter the international market such as North America and Canada, enterprises must grasp the requirements of these markets for products to achieve the right medicine. For Chinese companies, the most effective way is to ensure that their products meet the specific requirements of these markets through the testing and certification services of certification bodies such as CSA Group, and enhance the competitiveness of products in the international market.
