TE3610PF Dynamic Range Compression LSI (Tokyo Electronics)

Tokyo Electronics Co., Ltd. has begun selling TE3610PF LSI. The device is based on two image processing technologies developed by Apical Limited: the pixel-by-pixel dynamic range compression technology iridix® and the noise reduction core technology sinter®. Recently, video equipment requirements for high-quality images have been greatly improved. The need to improve image quality extends to security devices such as surveillance cameras and in-vehicle cameras, and the ability to reliably view views in reflective, dark areas or other obstructive environments is becoming increasingly important.

Apical's iridix image processing technology is a dynamic range compression technique that uses proprietary algorithms that mimic human retinal activity. By studying the Human Visual System (HVS), this method mimics how the retina automatically adjusts the dynamic range of the image by adjusting the brightness of each pixel in real time through local areas within the reference frame. This technology reproduces images in the most natural way, regardless of the environment in which the picture is captured. Iridix is ​​the most advanced technology in its class.

The standard form of dynamic range adjustment is the application of nonlinear gain to the image by gamma correction. As the dynamic range of the scene changes, this global processing gradually reduces the contrast, resulting in a large amount of information being lost and images often being unsatisfactory. However, during the iridix dynamic range compression process, each pixel that allows the image to be reproduced in a manner similar to the human eye can achieve the best tone curve alone. Under any conditions, information content and local contrast will always be maintained.

In addition to iridix, the TE3610PF also uses “sinter” noise reduction technology to improve the compression efficiency of JPEG and MPEG by reducing the noise of the sensor before compression.

The TE3610PF is connected to the final stage of the AFE (analog front end) (see Figure 1: Example of a surveillance camera application) to apply the correction to high-information raw data to maximize dynamic range compression.

This LSI is mainly used for digital cameras and security devices such as surveillance cameras and car cameras. In addition to the markets in China, Taiwan and North America, sales will also target the Japanese market; the sales target for 2009 is 150 million yen.
