A California startup is studying whether VR can help patients with chronic pain

Virtual reality (VR) has been used in hospitals to distract patients from pain during medical procedures and after surgery. Some researchers are also studying how VR can be used to help patients with chronic pain.

Doctors and other experts are studying whether VR technology can help patients reduce chronic pain. For those suffering from chronic pain, this is usually a lifelong, debilitating disease that can only be controlled with powerful painkillers, such as those based on opioids.

The startup CognifiSense is testing a VR system with patients wearing VR helmets. They presented images of their own bodies, with the painful parts highlighted in bright colors. The idea behind this visualization is that it allows patients to distance themselves from pain.

The effectiveness of this therapy is currently unclear, because trials and tests are in a very early "proof of concept" stage. However, mainstream medical experts are seriously studying this treatment, and they are looking for a solution to the ongoing opioid crisis in the United States.

CognifiSense CEO Tassilo Baeuerle said in a statement: "Given that we are in the early stages of development, we cannot publicly share the details of our testing, but the current qualitative testing is completed to the extent that it has a promising future. We also provide conclusions at the early stage. It's too early."

The American Academy of Pain Medicine recently convened a meeting to discuss the use of virtual reality technology to treat acute and chronic pain. Experts agreed: "This is definitely worth studying."

The US-based SSM Medical Dean Medical Group is an integrated medical system. Philip Bain, a primary care physician and department head in Madison, Wisconsin, said: "Chronic pain is very complex, and different methods have different effects on different patients."
