UAVs capable of flying automatically will become a major trend in the future, but before that, the functions of drones need to be optimized.
One of the challenges faced by drones is how to avoid obstacles in the case of fast flight. The problem here is that the camera of the drone can only process the captured picture at a certain speed. If the flight speed exceeds 30 miles per hour (about 48 kilometers), then there will be problems.
To this end, the Massachusetts Institute of Technology has launched a new research project. The project is based on a technology called Dynamic Vision Sensor (DVS), which was invented by researchers in Zurich, Switzerland. DVS can perform continuous tracking by observing changes in the brightness of the screen. This is similar to how the human brain processes visual information, so this technique processes images very quickly compared to conventional cameras.
A subsequent problem is that it takes a long processing time due to the large amount of data of the captured picture. When an obstacle is detected and a control command is issued, the drone may have an accident.
The results of the MIT research are further developed on this basis. The new algorithm can separate out special shading changes, which reduces the complexity of the images that need to be processed.
MIT graduate student Prince Singh said: "DVS has gained empirical success. However, there is no powerful algorithm that can handle the large amount of data obtained by sensors, thus controlling dynamic systems such as drones. ."
Singer demonstrated the results of this research at the IEEE American Control Conference in Seattle.
