Lei Fengwang (public number: Lei Feng network) news, Google's parent company Alphabet has a high air ball project Project Loon, hopes to use fluttering balloons to provide network services for the ground. According to TheVerge, Alphabet is changing the way it works.
Astro Teller, the head of the Alphabet experiment department, recently announced that the Loon team has learned how to control the navigation of these Internet balloons and can now focus on those places that really need the network.
Loon's original plan seems to be the opposite of our way of connecting with mobile phones, because in daily life we are moving and the base station is not moving. Loon’s balloon is constantly moving about 20 kilometers above us, allowing the equipment on the ground to connect to each “passing base stationâ€.
But Teller pointed out in a blog post that the Loon team is already using machine learning to control the direction of the balloons and where they stay. He stated that the team “has even exceeded its expectations and that their intelligent software algorithms can make balloons move around the globe as neededâ€. He said that as a result of this breakthrough, the team can now let the balloon stay in a certain area for a few months.
This will undoubtedly shorten the process of Loon's practical application, allowing it to provide Internet services from balloons to remote areas around the world.
According to Teller, adopting a more targeted approach will reduce the total number of balloons required for the project (from hundreds to tens), while also reducing the time required for the balloon to move to a specific coverage area. He also said that this will help the company obtain greater value from each balloon and increase the chance of project profitability. If this happens, this may be the most important change in the entire project.
It should be noted that, including Loon, Alphabet's whimsical projects have cost the company billions of dollars. Under the management of company’s chief financial officer Ruth Porat, profits and costs have become prominent in the company. Lei Fengnet has reported that when she took office last year, one of the tasks was to manage experimental projects that did not make money. Since then, Alphabet has eliminated the modular phone project Ara and the solar unmanned aerial vehicle project Titan. Other projects such as the drone express program and fiber optic Internet project Fiber are also struggling.
And while Loon was making new progress, Lei Feng learned that Google Fiber, the company's high-speed internet access service last night, was welcoming hundreds of new CEOs. Google Fiber is the flagship business of Alphabet’s Access subsidiary. Former CEO Craig Barratt left in October last year, and at that time the company had laid off about 9%.
However, it is not the fate of all projects. For example, Google’s autopilot project still hasn’t been able to make commercial progress, but it’s still alive and well. And it was during Porat’s tenure that the autopilot project was split into the independent company Waymo.
Taking into account such events, the new progress of Loon should allow the balloons to float for some time.
