Survey shows that Internet Explorer is the most efficient at preventing website attacks
Beijing time, March 5th, according to foreign media reports, the latest survey results released by product analysis company NSS Labs show that in preventing hackers from using trusted websites to install malware, IE browsers perform best, and their protection capabilities far exceed Mozilla Firefox , Apple Safari, Google Chrome, and Opera browsers.
NSS Labs publishes a report every six months to compare the capabilities and efficiency of major browsers to prevent socially engineered attacks. Social planning attacks refer to attacks where hackers use users' trust in websites to install and run malware.
A report in the first quarter of 2010 showed that IE8 had the best protection against social planning attacks, blocking 85% of the attacks on 562 websites; Firefox 3.5.7 and Safari 4.0.4 browsers could only block 29% of attacks, Chrome browser can only block 17%, while Opera version 10.10 can only block less than 1% of attacks. Except for the Opera browser, the latest version of the other four browsers has better interception capabilities than the previous version.
In the third quarter of 2009, the blocking efficiency of IE browser was 81%, higher than Firefox's 27%, Safari's 21%, Chrome's 8% and Opera's 1%. In the survey in the first quarter of 2009, the blocking efficiency of Internet Explorer was 69%, Firefox was 30%, Safari was 24%, Chrome was 16%, and Opera was 5%.
A Microsoft spokesperson said that although the investigation was funded by Microsoft, it was completely planned and implemented by NSS Labs. NSS Labs collected data on malicious attacks on websites through partners and found that 562 of the 12,000 websites had social planning attacks.
However, security industry sources said that browser security not only includes preventing social planning attacks, but also including turning off JavaScript, running security plug-ins, preventing exploits from being exploited, and loophole response time.
