AMD's first quarter net profit of 510 million US dollars

AMD released its first fiscal quarter 2011 earnings report on Thursday. The financial report shows that AMD’s first-quarter revenue was US$1.61 billion, an increase of 2% from US$1.57 billion in the same period last year; net profit was US$510 million, which was nearly double the net profit of US$257 million in the same period of last year.

In the first quarter ended April 2, AMD’s net revenue was US$1.61 billion, an increase of 2% from US$1.57 billion in the same period last year. AMD's net profit attributable to shareholders was $510 million, and earnings per share were $0.68. This performance was better than the same period of last year. In the first quarter of fiscal year 2010, AMD’s net profit was US$257 million, and its earnings per share was US$0.35. AMD’s first-quarter operating profit was 54 million U.S. dollars, and its operating profit for the same period last year was 182 million U.S. dollars.

Excluding Special items, AMD's adjusted first-quarter earnings per share was $0.08, which was better than analysts had expected. According to a Thomson Reuters survey, analysts had expected AMD’s adjusted first-quarter earnings per share to be US$0.05, with revenue of US$1.61 billion. AMD's gross profit margin for the first quarter was 43%, down from 47% in the same period of last year.

In the first quarter of 2011, AMD Computer Solutions' sales amounted to US$1.22 billion, compared to US$1.16 billion in the same period of last year; operating profit was US$100 million, and operating profit for the same period last year was US$146 million. AMD Graphics' sales was $413 million, compared to $409 million in the same period last year; operating profit was $19 million, and operating profit was $47 million in the same period last year. AMD's other departments had sales of US$0, compared with US$5 million in the same period last year; operating losses were US$65 million, and operating losses for the same period last year were US$11 million.

As of the end of the first fiscal quarter, AMD held cash, cash equivalents, and marketable securities totaling $1.75 billion. At the same time, AMD expects that the company's revenue in the second quarter will be flat or slightly lower than the first quarter.

AMD shares closed at $8.71 in regular trading on the New York Stock Exchange on Thursday, up $0.08 or 0.93% from the previous day. In the subsequent after-hours trading, AMD shares fell 0.06 US dollars, a decrease of 0.69% to close at 8.66 US dollars. In the past 52 weeks, AMD's lowest stock price was 5.53 US dollars, the highest stock price was 10.15 US dollars.
