REP038: Application of MAX2648 in 5GHz WLAN

Abstract: This paper presents a design scheme to implement a 5GHz low noise amplifier (LNA) based on MAX2648. Use low-cost FR-4 PCB board.

Rapid engineering prototypes (Rapid engineering prototypes) are the actual circuits that Maxim application engineers build and conduct product testing in the laboratory. They can provide a starting point for new RF engineering designs. They are not used as evaluation test tools.

The MAX2648 is a high-linearity, SiGe low-noise amplifier (LNA) designed specifically for 5GHz wireless LAN based on the 802.11a and HiperLAN2 standards. To reduce costs, the Duroid microstrip line on the MAX2648 evaluation board can be replaced with an FR4 substrate with coplanar waveguide lines. Use Agilent ADS â„¢ to simulate the topology of the evaluation board in the new coplanar structure.

The performance of the MAX2648 tested on the low-cost liner is almost the same as the test result on the MAX2648 evaluation board, but due to the higher loss of the FR4 material, the noise figure characteristics are slightly reduced.

The MAX2648 has high gain, low noise, and high linearity, making it a driver amplifier for the first-stage LNA, LO buffer, or transmitter. It provides a gain of 17dB, a noise figure of 1.8dB and an IIP3 of 0dBm, while the current consumption is only 12mA. It is packaged in a 2 × 36 solder ball bare chip level (CPS) package with an external dimension of 1.0 mm × 1.5 mm.
