Sharp's $15 billion ($169 million) flat-panel TV backlight production line will be mass-produced this year, and it is expected that all of its LCDTVs will adopt LED backlights next spring.
Sharp plans to produce blue LEDs at the Hiroshima fab, with an annual capacity of 5 billion, with about one-third of the supply needed internally, and Sharp's attempt to reduce costs through self-sufficiency in components.
