USB-C is coming, MagSafe hasn’t reached the end of its popularity

Since its release in 2006, MagSafe has been one of the driving forces to move people from the PC to the Mac because it cuts people's real needs: When you spend $2,000 on a laptop, connect it to the wall on a certain day. Charging, if accidentally bumped into the charging line, this expensive notebook is likely to fall on the ground and broke.

No one wants to encounter such a thing, and MagSafe is born to solve this problem. After a "bang", the magnetic force can firmly connect the MagSafe charging head to the Apple laptop. However, it is not completely solid. Later, if someone pulls the cord, it will break and separate the notebook from the cord.

When people use MagSafe, it is hard to imagine how to "physically" plug everything into a notebook. With this experience, no one seems to want to use the old-fashioned notebook. However, Apple has pushed this product to its own end. Apple's patent is like a hell, so that other manufacturers can not produce similar products, or they will be prosecuted. If any of the magnetically-sensed cables can be disconnected from the connected object in any direction without damaging it, then it violates Apple's patent. Even Microsoft's Surface has been forced to use more adhesive and less effective connectors. In deeper terms, it even prevented headset manufacturers from making magnetically-coupled products.


This does not mean that MagSafe is perfect. The early product was a T-shaped design that could wear out and cause overheating. In 2009, it also incurred a lawsuit. After that, the improved product can completely cover the interface. By 2012, Apple has finally released a product that can completely solve this problem.

However, yesterday's MacBook conference, Apple released a thinner product, which also means that there is no place to insert MagSafe. However, there is good news: The new USB-C connector technology is open, and other companies can produce and use USB-C charging, not just Apple.

MagSafe's loyal followers may be comforted by the following rumors: MagSafe may remain in the form of a wall outlet.

But this is the end of an era. In the future, Apple's laptop will probably be transferred from MagSafe to USB-C. Maybe when Apple no longer uses MagSafe someday, they will eventually let other companies use magnetic force to innovate.
