The full name of EDGE in English is EnhancedDataratefor GSM Evolution, meaning “improved data rate GSM service” in Chinese. It is a highlight of the data-enhanced mobile communications market based on GSM/GPRS networks. At the same time, some European mobile operators have begun to show interest in EDGE, and both TIM and TeliaSonera have made it clear that they will adopt EDGE technology. This technology mainly lies in the ability to use broadband services, enabling the use of the 800, 900, 1800, 1900 MHz frequency band network to provide part of the functions of the third generation of mobile communication networks, and can greatly improve the standardized services currently provided in GSM and TDMA/136. The technology can provide wide-area data communication services of 384kbps and local data communication services of about 2Mbps, which can fully meet the bandwidth requirements of future wireless multimedia applications.

The concept of EDGE was first proposed by Ericsson to ETSI in 1997. In the same year, ETSI approved the feasibility study of EDGE, paving the way for the future development of EDGE. Although EDGE still uses the GSM carrier bandwidth and slot structure, it can also be used in other cellular communication systems. EDGE can be seen as an effective general-purpose wireless interface technology that provides high bit rates and thus facilitates the evolution of cellular mobile systems to third generation capabilities. On this basis, the Unified Wireless Communications Forum (UWCC) evaluated the EDGE technology for TDMA/136 and approved it in January 1998.

EDGE provides a transitional solution from GPRS to third-generation mobile communications, enabling existing network operators to make maximum use of existing wireless network equipment and provide users with advanced services before the commercialization of third-generation mobile networks. Since GDGE is a transition technology between existing second-generation mobile networks and third-generation mobile networks, it is also known as "second-half" technology. EDGE also makes full use of existing GSM resources and protects the investment made in GSM. Most of the existing equipment can continue to be used in EDGE. EDGE can provide three groups of services: EGPRS service: maximum rate ≥ 384kbps 48kbps/BP; T-ECSD service: transparent enhanced circuit-switched service, the highest rate ≥ 32kpbs/Bp; NT-ECSD: non-transparent enhanced circuit-switched service, the highest rate ≥ 28.8kbps.
