There are many types of flow meters, and there are many classification methods. There is no specific classification method. However, when classifying, the flow measurement is first divided into closed pipe flow measurement and open channel flow measurement.

According to the measurement principle classification, the flowmeter can be divided into four categories: differential pressure flowmeter, speed flowmeter, volumetric flowmeter, mass flowmeter.

Classified according to the type of measuring fluid: liquid, gas, steam, liquid two-phase flow, etc. Finer divisions such as liquids are divided into water and oil, and gases can be classified into normal pressure and high pressure. Most flow meters can be used to measure both liquid and measurement gases.

Classified by measurement method: Volume flowmeters are divided into two types: actual measurement and push type. Mass flow meters can be divided into direct and indirect types.

Classified by time characteristics: flowmeters that can be divided into measurement flowmeters and flow rate measurement, that is, one type is to measure the volume of fluid intermittently, such as a volumetric flowmeter; the other is to use fluid directly or indirectly. B open channel flow measurement: mostly used in chiselling, water irrigation, sewage monitoring and other fields. The measuring method is generally divided into two types, one is the measuring method of the flow rate plus liquid level, and the ultrasonic flow meter plus the liquid level meter, the propeller flow rate meter plus the liquid level meter and the electromagnetic flow meter plus the liquid level meter, etc.; the other type includes Radon flowmeter, horizontal flowmeter, ultrasonic flowmeter and electromagnetic flowmeter.
