Google's new patent exposure, smart glasses launched second generation products equipped with MicroLED screen

Patently Apple recently discovered a patent application filed by the US Patent Office confirming that Google engineers are using micro LED displays to find new solutions for Google Glass.

Use MicroLED screen Google glasses or will launch second generation products

In April, some reports, including CNBC, showed that after Google’s glasses retired from the public, some of its features still played a role in product applications. From a consumer perspective, the device looks like a pirate, so it will make the user stand out from the crowd in a negative way, causing them to be treated differently.

The project was silently transferred to Google's Nest department, hoping that the new team could introduce fresh vision and ideas, transform Google Glass and better integrate it into the public. Patently Apple recently discovered a patent application filed by the US Patent Office confirming that Google engineers are using micro LED displays to find new solutions for Google Glass.

Apple's AR / VR project and interest in Micro LED

Apple's MicroLED display is because the company has the world's leading MicroLED company: LuxVue.

In January 2016, Patently Apple published a report titled "Apple's Secret" VR Team is No Longer Secret. Apple is indeed building a team of AR and VR experts. In April 2017, we learned more about Apple's hire of NASA's mission operations innovation director, Jeff Norris. His 160-person team is a pioneer in developing head-up applications such as Oculus Rift, Vive, and Microsoft HoloLens.

In September, we released a report titled "MicroLED Display Is Developing, Apple's LuxVue has the main patent for development." The report covers the progress of MicroLED displays and makes application predictions for this seemingly promising new display.

At first, it was thought that a device with a smaller display such as a smart watch or a smart phone would be the entry point for the MicroLED. Apple's LuxVue patented the smart pixel MicroLED display in July. We also know that Apple has legally included "smart glasses" in the recent trademark application (one or two). In the end, Apple won a patent for AR glasses through Metaio in July, which was acquired by Apple and assisted in the development of ARKit.

Overall, it takes time to combine a high-quality MicroLED display, the right audio, battery life and applications to form a cool smart eyewear. We know that Apple is currently working on this project.

However, with the disclosure of Google's latest patent application, we can see that the Micor LED display may soon be used in Google and Apple smart glasses. As Apple is about to become the leader of AR through iOS, smart glasses may become a creative product to consolidate its leading position.

About Google Glass MicroLED related patents

Now let's take a look at Google's latest patent application.

As shown in the Google patent in Figure 1, the new Google Glass looks more everyday, and it allows users to integrate into the crowd without causing suspicion and trouble. Its shape is softer and a MicroLED display is added to the left and right lenses.

Figure 3B above is a partial perspective view of a head mounted display showing how the image segmentation circuitry is embedded in a transparent substrate adjacent to the MicroLED display array.

From a technical point of view, Google's patent Figure 1 is a perspective view of a head mounted display #100 with a MicroLED display that is consistent with the disclosed object. The head mounted display in the physical map includes a display #105, circuitry #110 and #112, and a frame assembly for wearing on the user's head.

Each display includes a display area #107 that includes a series of MicroLED displays that correspond to a series of collimating mirrors that reflect the display image #108 of the user's eye #109.

The physical map of the frame assembly includes a front frame #115, a left ear arm #120, and a right ear arm #125. In the physical map, circuits #110 and #112 are respectively embedded or otherwise disposed in or on the left and right ear arms, and in addition, the circuits may be distributed in or on the front frame. The circuit can include a variety of electronic devices, including one or more display controllers (eg, one for each lens #105), a microprocessor, several interfaces, one or more wireless transceivers, a battery, and a camera module. And a speaker, etc.

In addition, Figure 1 shows that a display in the form of a transparent lens can combine ambient light #130 with display image #108 to present an augmented reality effect to the user.

In another figure, display #105 may not be transparent, but presents the user with the effect of virtual reality.

In addition, the head mounted display can take on more shapes than conventional glasses such as goggles, blinds, and the like.

Google filed a patent application in March 2016. Considering that this is still only a patent application, the time to market is still unknown.

The first revolution of mobile phones is turning to the first revolution of AI

At present, the technical wars on several aspects of future computing continue to heat up, including AI and machine learning, various smart glasses and AR / VR applications.

In October, Patently Apple announced two reports, saying that Google is trying to convey the idea that Apple is the old-fashioned, mobile phone as a priority industry, and they are the future company based on AI.

Although Google Glass was hit hard at the beginning, they are working hard to introduce second-generation devices, making AI and machine learning stand out as their flagship products, and to some extent surpassing Apple, which led the mobile phone revolution with the iPhone. Google hopes to reach such a consensus with the public.

Microsoft is pushing HoloLens to develop. Yesterday they also launched a series of AI and machine learning at the London Developers Conference, and Apple continues to publish their machine learning magazines, trying to attract developers to their platforms.

Just yesterday, Panos Panay, senior vice president of surface equipment at Microsoft, said at a conference in London: “Today we are here to talk about the future. You may be in the most exciting era. Technology is coming to you. Artificial intelligence is working Leading us, data is driving us to find the true meaning of mixed reality. We are moving towards a more intelligent edge."

Panay and they delivered the same message to Google through three similar focuses: mixed reality, AI and machine learning.

Although, as Cook said in the Independent in October, Apple could not claim that it would be the first to introduce smart glasses to the market, but it is clear that Google and Microsoft are doing their best to ensure Apple Not considered a leader in AI and machine learning, but a far behind follower.

Despite this, Apple's ultimate ARKit and AR in iOS and iPhone X have surprised both competitors. Apple has shown that they are keeping up with future trends and even leading in some areas.

In terms of smart glasses, Apple has just had enough of a leading MicroLED company, LuxVue, so Apple has also taken the lead in this field.

We only hope that when Apple finally decides to launch their smart glasses, it can live up to the seaport that Cook has boasted, rather than becoming a laggard in the industry like Apple TV.
