GE acquires two AI startups

On the morning of November 16th, Beijing time, General Electric (GE) said on Tuesday that it has acquired two high-tech startups to build artificial intelligence and compete with IBM's artificial intelligence product Watson.

General Electric said the acquisition of Bit Stew Systems and Wise.io aims to expand the Predix platform for industrial Internet applications, connecting large machines from power plants, aircraft engines to databases and analytics software. Terms of the transaction were not disclosed.

Bill Ruh, chief executive of GE's software division GE Digital, said in an interview that Wise.io is headquartered in Berkeley, California, and they have advanced machine learning technology that GE believes is "very Suitable for use in the industrial world."

As a branch of artificial intelligence, machine learning allows computers to adapt to new data without reprogramming.

Bit Stew is headquartered in Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada, and is partially funded by GE's venture capital firm. The company's website shows that they are good at applying machine learning to large data sets related to utilities, aerospace, oil and gas production and manufacturing.

Artificial intelligence systems enable computers to perform intelligent actions such as discerning sounds and making decisions, and Watson of International Business Machines (IBM) is well-known in this field.
