The VR chip battlefield will be launched, and it is expected to develop professional-grade chips/ICs.

In 2016, virtual reality (VR) is one of them, and more and more VR devices can be seen on the market. There is no shortage of chip makers behind this craze. At this year's IDF Summit, Intel CEO Ke Zaiqi highlighted the Alloy project in a keynote speech in an effort to redefine the integrated virtual reality platform. Qualcomm also started using Snapdragon 820 for VR optimization and launched a special SDK. Graphics processors such as NVIDIA and AMD are investing more in VR chips. In a certain sense, behind the fictitious virtual reality, it is more like a chip manufacturer war.

The battle for VR chips is on the rise

VR is not only the opportunity for the rise of hardware devices and software content providers, but also a good opportunity for the underlying chip vendors to seize the blue ocean. Chip makers are all struggling to find a place in the big industry chain of VR. ARM CEO Simon Segars said in an interview: "The VR for high-end experience requires high computing power and graphics performance. These things are still very expensive. But we also saw everything happening on smartphones, digital cameras and TVs. The price reduction of such products is very rapid, and high-end technology will soon become civilian."

At the same time, some experience bottlenecks in VR hardware have also enabled chip manufacturers to have more development opportunities, break through existing obstacles, and promote the development of new technologies in the direction of further commercialization. At the Consumer Electronics Show in Berlin (IFA 2016), Qualcomm released a VR all-in-one reference design, the Snapdragon VR820. This device, which can be used as a reference standard for all-in-ones, is a collaboration between Qualcomm and Goer Acoustics, based on the Qualcomm Snapdragon 820 processor and its software development kit. In March of this year, Qualcomm also launched a Snapdragon 820 development kit for developers, which can simplify the development process, greatly reduce the rendering delay, support stereo rendering, and lens, color, distortion correction, etc., to help software developers create better VR. Immersive experience.

Intel's Alloy Headset (HMD) leverages Intel's sensing and computing technology to allow users to cut off "virtual reality device cables" and achieve six free angles in a larger space (6 degree- Any move of of-freedom). Combined with collision detection and collision avoidance analysis, users can explore virtual space through body movement.

In addition to Intel, Qualcomm and other leading chip manufacturers, Nvidia, AMD and other in the graphics processing, STMicroelectronics, AWS and other sensors in the field, have invested a lot of VR. Chinese chip makers are also joining the competitive landscape. Ruixin Micro has launched the RK3399 chip, and Quanzhi will release a VR hardware solution based on its own chip.

With the further fierce VR market and the full commercialization of the future, VR chips may even become a big market after the development of the chip industry after the smart phone. Therefore, in a certain sense, behind the current virtual reality is a battle between chip manufacturers.

Expected to develop VR chip

However, observing the VR chips on the market, it can be found that most of the current chip manufacturers are only based on the SoC of their smartphones and tablets, and optimized for VR and then launched, there are few chips specifically developed for VR. Nathan Brookwood, principal analyst at market research firm Insight 64, said that most virtual reality helmet chips are currently based on mobile devices or PC chips. However, if VR helmet sales reach tens of millions, Intel, AMD and Qualcomm may develop dedicated chips.

The cost of chip development is very high, and only when the sales volume reaches a certain scale is economically meaningful. Market research firm Gartner predicts that this year's virtual reality helmet sales will increase from 140,000 units last year to 1.4 million units, and will further increase to 6.3 million units next year. In the future, the VR market will grow and it will not be impossible to launch a dedicated chip. Google's Project Tango has designed a chip dedicated to 3D processing.

In the past few years, virtual reality has developed rapidly. However, for most of the current virtual reality technologies, how to integrate real body movements, environments and virtual objects, environments and actions still faces enormous challenges. In the final analysis, current virtual reality is not really that virtual. Many complex controls, a large number of sensors and cameras, and manual controls are often required. It is believed that as the market expands, more and more technologies, talents and funds will be attracted, and VR chips will become an important mainstream market.
